R.I.P. McGuider Print E-mail

McGuider is officially no more, having been withdrawn from the TeleAtlas portfolio officially from 13th November 2009. A short statement on the offical McGuider websitewebsite reads

Dear McGuider user and friend,

We would like to inform you that, with effect from 13 November 2009, McGuider products will no longer be part of the Tele Atlas portfolio. For future reference, we would like to recommend Sygic mobile maps, which is very similar in functionality and pricing to McGuider 2009. The latest version of mobile maps can be ordered from our online shopordered from our online shop.

This news does not really come as a surprise given TeleAtlas has not offically sold McGuider for much of the past year. In fact it was something of a surprise when new stock arrived on the TeleAtlas website a couple of months ago.

As the TeleAtlas statement says, Sygic Mobile Maps 9 offer very similar functionality - hardly surprising since McGuider was just a rebranded version of Sygic Drive (the name given to Mobile Maps in previous years). The new version also supports newer hardware including Google Android and Windows Mobile 6.5 based devices.

We are on the hunt for reviewers to provide some indepth reviews of McGuider and Sygic Drive/Mobile on their device. If you are interested in the first instance please contact Vince Marsters using the contact link on the left.

The kind of information we would like on the the reviews should cover the good as well as the bad. Highlighting where McGuider performs very well and routes efficiently as well as those times where routes do not make sense or the information given may not be as accurate as it could be. Also included should be information on the phones used, its firmware revision and the verison of McGuider/Sygic reviewed.

Update to McGuider 2009 Now Available Print E-mail

McGuider Assistant (available from herehere) is showing an application update for both Windows Mobile and Symbian based devices. The download is just over 15MB and takes the application revision to 7.71 (the same version as supplied with Sygic Mobile 2009).

There are limited differences immediately obvious, but a huge gotcha is that the update nukes your personal settings file, requiring you to set McGuider back up again. This includes all settings like home location and POI customisations.

New POI Convertor Batch File Uploaded Print E-mail
Written by Vince Marsters
Sunday, 05 April 2009 19:49

We have uploaded a new POI Convertor batch file to the downloads section. This one is an improvement on the original batch files uploaded for converting PocketGPSWorld speed camera files as it converts all .txt files present in the folder. Like the batch files it requires the Sygic POI ConvertorSygic POI Convertor to also be present in the folder.

To use

  1. Copy the convert.bat file into the folder where the correctly formated .txt files are present.
  2. Copy the Sygic POI Convertor.exe file into the same folder.
  3. Run convert.bat.

We are grateful to Sonym (Sygic Rep) on Allaboutsymbian.comAllaboutsymbian.com for the base script used by this new file.
