New Icons Optimised for WVGA Screens Print E-mail
Written by Vince Marsters
Monday, 09 February 2009 23:24

Today we have launched some new icons which are nearly twice as large as those currently supplied with the PocketGPSWorld downloads. At present they are available for the UK Speed Zoned database only, but if enough people request some for other databases, they will be converted for these as well.

48x48 UK Speed Zoned

The icons are optimised for display on WVGA (480x800) screens similar to the one fitted to the new HTC Touch HD, as the stock icons are displayed very small on the high resolution display.

They can be downloaded from the downloads section.

Symbian Bug Fix Update Print E-mail
Written by Vince
Thursday, 05 February 2009 00:00

Sygic have released an update to the McGuider 2009 application which fixes the bug which caused the application to crash when using custom POI. It is available exclusively through the McGuider Assistant (the update application found on the McGuider SD Card).
To install, just click the update button in McGuider Assistant and the necessary applications will be updated. The help icon by the download also gives full instructions on how to update.

We have been informed that due to the amount of support issues TeleAtlas were receiving, they have temporarily pulled this update whilst the regroup and reorganise themselves. Hopefully it will be live again soon though as it is required for any Symbian users.

TeleAtlas Supporting McGuider?? Print E-mail

There is a serious bug in the current McGuider 2009 (7.7) program when used on a Symbian phone. Simply, the program will crash when you try to use custom POI (and some have reported it happens on in-built POI too) on a map to provide alerts. Sygic have a fixed executable available but do require TeleAtlas to authorise its release to customers. Unfortunately they do not seem to willing to do this for some reason. In fact they have been unhelpful for some users when support has been requested.

What is needed is for TeleAtlas to do the right thing and support their users. McGuider is still a new product on the market and has huge potential, but bungled support and updates will only discredit the product and put potential new customers off. Come on TeleAtlas, do the right thing by your users please.

Batch Files for Converting PGPSW McGuider Speedcams Print E-mail
Written by Vince
Thursday, 29 January 2009 00:00

I have today uploaded some batch files to be used to convert the latest PGPSW database files quickly and easily with Sygic's POI ConvertorSygic's POI Convertor. As standard the Sygic convertor will only convert one file at a time, but it is possible to run the convertor from a batch file, and to use this to make multiple changes quickly and easily.

To use the batch files it is important to make sure you have both the latest speed camera fileslatest speed camera files and the Sygic convertor in the same folder as the batch file.

Another Week, Another New POI Convertor Print E-mail
Written by Vince
Tuesday, 27 January 2009 00:00

Sygic have today released another new version of the POI Convertor (herehere), this time adding the option of converting the old (McGuider 2008) custom POI UPI files to the new format used by McGuider 2009.

Although Sygic have claimed there is no change to the binary format of the UPI file between versions, they have said (on AllAboutSymbian.com) that the logical format of the file has changed between versions, causing the odd incompatabilities.

The new convertor keeps the old features of manual conversion of tab delimited text files into the new UPI format and also a reverse conversion to text, as well as the ability to run conversions from a command prompt (useful for creating batch files for multiple conversions on a regular basis) By adding the new ability to convert older UPI files to the new format (the conversion is a batch method to convert all files in a directory rather than a single file conversion), Sygic have also provided a way to convert TomTom format OV2 files using the unofficial OV2UPI 2.3 convertor and this new program to first ocnvert to the old format and then into the new.
